More about Alleppey:
Alleppey, an exceptional
coastal township, is a network of lakes and lagoons and canals
crisscrossing each other. It’s nearness to the Arabian
Sea has given Alleppey a special place in the maritime history
of Kerala. Alleppey has often been referred to as the Venice
of the East by travelers from around the world. The beach of
Alleppey, which is also called Alappuzha, has a 140 year old
pier which extends up to the sea. In the stormiest of nights,
this sea shore has provided a safe anchor to sailors from time
immemorial.
Apart from the Chavara
Bhavan and the Champakkulam church, Ambalappuzha temple located
15 km south of Alleppey is one of the top attractions. Built
in typical Kerala architecture, this temple has the paintings
of the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu engraved on its inner
walls.
The deliciously sweet
palpaysam (milk desert) made here as daily offering to the gods
attracts huge crowds. The ‘velans’ (sorcerers) perform
Pallipana every 12 years in this temple. This temple was the
first to host “Ottanthullal”, a satiric art form
by the poet Kunchan Nambiar.
