More About Kottayam:
Kottayam – “the
land of lakes, latex and letters”, that’s
what it is famously called. Interspersed with a network of canals
and lakes, Kottayam is also known for its toddy tappers. This
is one place where you will find that even one person is not
illiterate. The entire population of Kottayam is educated making
it a land of letters too.
Kottayam has played a major
role in the politics of Kerala. As the history of Kottayam shows-
Maharaja Marthandaverma influenced the state of Kerala in a
major way as its ruler. The Vembolinadu established by previous
rulers, was conquered by him.
“Kottayam”
is a name composed of two words, “Kotta” which means
fort and “Akkam” meaning inside. The landscape of
Kottayam is a combination of three types of land composition
– low, middle and high, giving it an exotic look. Situated
on the southern part of Kerala, Kottayam is surrounded by Ernakulam
in the north, Idukki district in the east and Alphuzza and Pathanamthitta
districts in the south. On its western side is the Vembanad
Lake and a canal connects the Lake with Kottayam. |
